Educational sessions will be held on Monday 29 September - the day before the conference. Class fees are $100 unless otherwise noted. Note that examinations for LCA Professional Certification are scheduled for the morning of 29 September.

Introduction to Sima-Pro: Taught by Earth Shift personnel, this class gives new uses a chance to see the basics of how this general life cycle software, Sima-Pro works. Attendance is free.
Introduction to GaBi: Taught by PE Americas staff. (See PE Americas flyer)Free half day class to introduce the life cycle software platform GaBi 4 and to explore different approaches for measuring and quantifying the life cycle performance of processes and products.
Carbon Footprinting: This class will be taught by Tom Gloria, Chief Knowledge Officer of equilibrium. Students will learn about the current approaches and pitfalls of carbon footprinting.
Total Cost Assessment: Taught by Lise Laurin, President of Earth Shift.
In business, we assess decisions based on expected Net Present Value or Return on Investment. In many cases, however, the real NPV or ROI is affected by events that were not considered in the initial calculation. Total Cost Assessment is a methodology that systematically identifies and quantifies both upside and downside risks to give a picture of the future reflecting the real uncertainties surrounding the decision. TCA includes the traditional costs associated with a decision, and can apply Real Options Analysis as a part of the assessment.
In this course, you will learn the five different cost types and the seven steps in the TCA Methodology defined by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). In addition to the databases developed by the AIChE to assess contingent liabilities and potential fines, we will explore the costs associated with brand value, morale, community relations, and other intangibles. We’ll follow up with a simple example showing how the methodology works and the insight it provides to a decision.

A half day class on Life Cycle Assessment methodology, we will also explore techniques for applying Design for Environment (DfE), methods for calculating the carbon footprint of products and tips on developing credible Environmental Product Declaration (EPD).
The first examinations for LCA Professional Certification will be given. Reduced fees are offer to those willing to participate in a focus group to help improve the process.
