Minutes of the Certification Criteria Committee - 3 April 2008

Attending the meeting were Matthias Fischer, Tom Gloria, Richard Heinisch, Sebastien Humbert Gary Jakubcin, Annie Landfield-Grieg, Mike Levy, Mike Richardson, Rita Schenck and Ines Sousa.

The team picked a name for the certification: Life Cycle Assessment Certified Professional (LCACP).

We reviewed the remaining comments on the criteria and made the following decisions:
# 35—Accept comment: language changes to reflect an understanding of the carbon footprint.
# 39: Accept comment, drop the criterion.
# 41: Accept comment, re-write to use the word “model or methodologies” in lieu of “data”.
#42: Reject comment
#55: Reject comment, monetization is more than is expected at entry level
#56: Accept comment, change language to reference “fundamental LCA calculations” or “back of the envelope calculations”
#57: Delete criterion: covered in prerequisites
#63: Accept comment: change language to reference sensitivity analysis.
#64: Accept comment: Change language to understanding accuracy and uncertainty concepts.
#65: Change language to specifically reference ISO 14040 and 14044.
#66: Separate into two criteria, one specifically on comparative assertions

The group reviewed the grandfathering proposal, and accepted it with the clarification that authorship means that one is listed as an author, not that one is the first author.

In order to gain certification, everyone must take the exam, with the single exception that for this round of the exam, those preparing questions for the exam (providing they meet the prerequisites) will gain certification without taking the test. This is a practical matter, as one cannot both write the exam and take it.

It was noted that some of the criteria have not yet been assigned. Rita will send out the list for people to select issues.

We took up the issue of recertification. The group is requested to review the document for our next discussion, and to think especially about the sections listing appropriate and inappropriate sources of CEU’s (Section 8, page 4).

Our next meeting will be on 21 April 2008, at 8 am Pacific time, 11 am Eastern.
