Minutes LCACP Certification Criteria Committee - 21 April 2008

Present at the meeting were: Mark Binder, Roland Geyer, Sean McGinnis, Barbara Hanley, Sebastien Humbert, Gary Jakubcin, Annie Landfield-Grieg, Rita Schenck, Ines Sousa and Liila Woods.

We reviewed the recertification process. The group identified courses for which CEU’s could be offered, including carbon footprinting, toxicology, and Life Cycle Impact Assessment. They also identified courses for which CEU’s cannot be offered, including Courses in the Natural Step, Ecological Footprinting, LEED Certification, or other Green Specifications.

There was an extensive discussion about the credits for non-courses. It was decided that peer reviewed publications could account for no more than 24 credits per cycle, and that they should be worth 12 points each, rather than a per-page system. Rita will make changes in the document to reflect these decisions and other editorial changes, and distribute the document befor the next conference call.

Rita reported the decision of the IERE Board about the examination fees. They will be $495 but we are requesting that the first cadre of applicants act as a focus group over the next year, providing guidance to improve the process. In consideration, they will be offered the certification exam for $250. Those committee members providing exam questions will be automatically grandfathered as LCACP’s without fees.

We discussed the exam questions. There should be three questions for each topic. In order to facilitate unbiased and rapid exam grading, they should be multiple choice questions (4 choices) to the greatest extent possible. Where short essay questions are unavoidable, the question writer should clearly identify the content necessary for a correct answer to the question.

Most of the topics have been assigned, but some still lack authors/volunteers. Those who have not yet chosen topics are requested to do so. The table below shows the criteria: unclaimed topics are highlighted in yellow. Volunteers should notify Rita of the topics they would like to cover, and should send questions to Rita by May 14. She will post them on the password-protected portion of the website, and will remind the committee members of the password.

Our next meeting will be on May 22, 8 am Pacific Time, 11 am Eastern Time.
